There was no announcement on a resolution in the compensation package the Cubs will have to send to the Red Sox for Epstein.

A major league source told the Tribune, "This had to be done. Theo wasn't going back to Boston. At some point you have to set a deadline."

Compensation is expected to be settled sometime in the next 10 days.

"Out of respect for the World Series, both clubs have agreed to forego further comment," the news release said. Epstein, who will received a reported $18.5 million over five years, are to announce at a news conference Tuesday at Wrigley Field, the next off day in the World Series, while the Red Sox Boston are to do likewise in naming Ben Cherington as Epstein's successor.

After the World Series, the Cubs will bring in Padres' GM Jed Hoyer, cheap jerseys from china who also will receive a five-year deal, as their next GM and his assistant Jason McLeod.

The Padres have reportedly agreed to a list of Cubs minor league players to choose from as compensation for Hoyer and McLeod.

Thus ends, at least for the time being, a bizarre saga that began when Cubs general manager Jim Hendry was fired in late August, one month after being told he was going to be dismissed, and shortly before the Red Sox began an epic collapse that ultimately made Epstein dispensable in the minds of ownership.

It was a perfect storm of events for Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts, who went into the so-called "GM" search with a list of candidates he wasn't sure would be available, with Epstein at the top. Epstein won two World Series with the Red Sox, in 2004 and '07, and has the Boston pedigree the Cubs desired.

As soon as Epstein arrives in Chicago, he will have some key personnel decisions to make concerning his new front office team and his roster. According to a source, he will not have any interference from Crane Kenney, whose title of team president will change to president of business blackhawks

operations. Kenney was not supposed to be involved in the hiring process, but the Ricketts family believes he was instrumental in helping lure Epstein, according to a source, assuring the Red Sox GM he would have total control of all baseball-related decisions.

One of the valued Cubs' employees Epstein will speak with soon is former Cubs pitcher Greg Maddux, who was an assistant to Hendry and is a fan favorite. Maddux said Friday he is undecided on whether he will return to the team in 2012 because of family issues.

"I'm interested in staying in baseball," Maddux said. "The last two years miami heat jerseys

have been great. I haven't spoken to Theo yet ? so it's kind of not even an issue."

Maddux's contract ends in late December, but he said he's not ready to commit to 2012 yet even if Epstein wants him in the organization.

"Hopefully by spring training I'll have a better idea," Maddux said of his future plans. nfl jerseys cheap"Right now, it's 'Go Rangers.'" Maddux's brother, Mike, is the Rangers' pitching coach.

Epstein also will have to make a decision on his manager, with Mikecheap jerseys Quade waiting patiently for a determination about his future. Most speculation has centered on Epstein choosing Ryne Sandberg as his next manager, though with Hoyer in the picture, everything is suddenly up in the air.

Rays bench coach Dave Martinez, former Red Sox manager Terry Francona and others whom Epstein and Hoyer admire. No one knows exactly what they have in mind, as Epstein has not spoken publicly since Francona was forced to resign after the season. Padres manager Bud Black is not expected to be a candidate.

Though it took a lot longer than he may have expected, and the story took some unpredictable twists and turns, Ricketts eventually got the man he wanted all along.

Now the work begins to change the Cubs' culture, with Epstein and Hoyer leading the charge.
